Young Boys Wankdorf erection relief


BERN, Switzerland, July 31 (Reuters) - The supporters of Young Boys Bern have not had too much to celebrate in the 19 years since their team last won the Swiss league title.
Long since eclipsed by the likes of FC Basel and Grasshoppers Zurich, the club from the Swiss capital has even got a reputation for enjoying its status as a perennial loser.


But this weekend Young Boys sought to shake off their old image by officially opening the 32,000 Stade de Suisse Wankdorf stadium -- which cost 350 million Swiss francs ($271.3 million) -- with an uncharacteristically flashy homecoming party.

'I'm extremely happy, because I'm convinced this is the stadium from which Young Boys can finally launch themselves back into sporting success,' Swiss president, and Bern native, Samuel Schmid told spectators just before Saturday's show got underway.

Looking on as acrobats, musicians and dancers took to the pitch, the stadium's private investors gladly shared Schmid's enthusiasm while insisting the financial viability of the overall complex does not depend solely on the team's success.

'We have learned a lot from the multifunctional stadium at FC Basel,' stadium board president Benno Oertig told Reuters.

'When you look at the total investment, it's clear that we had to have other sources of income than just the football, which is why we have a supermarket, shops, offices and even a school included in the complex.'

'But of course the performance of the football club will have an important knock-on effect.

'We have calculated for average crowds of around 15,000 per match and are also targeting at least a third place finish in the league this season. That might put some pressure on the club, but you need pressure if you want to succeed.'

Fortunately for team coach Hans-Peter Zaugg, the club's backers also appreciate the need to invest in players.

Working to a budget of about 8.5 million Swiss francs -- surpassed in Swiss football only by FC Basel's estimated 30 million -- Zaugg made eight pre-season signings.

The most notable coup was convincing Switzerland midfielder and former Basel hero Hakan Yakin to join the club.

Having won both their opening away matches to take an early lead at the top of the Swiss standings, Young Boys already look prepared for their season of change.

'The building of the new stadium certainly played a part in my coming here,' Yakin told Reuters on Saturday.

'I'd already seen what a new home can do for a team during my time at Basel -- so now it's up to us players to put in performances that will bring in the supporters.'

Despite the recently appended Stade de Suisse title, the new Wankdorf does not have any official status as a national stadium and will share the staging of international matches with the other new Swiss grounds in Basel and Geneva.

The future hosts for Swiss Cup finals -- previously held exclusively in Bern -- is also still to be decided.

The Bern stadium is, however, already set to stage three group matches at the 2008 European Championships, marking a return to the international stage more than half a century after the old Wankdorf hosted the 1954 World Cup final.

Back in those days, Young Boys had something of a giant-killing reputation in Europe and even reached the semi-finals of the 1959 European Cup.

A second round defeat to Olympic Marseille in this season's Intertoto Cup reminded Bern's supporters that European glory is still a long way off.

Thanks to the new home, though, domestic success no longer looks quite so impossible.

1) signing up for 'mars and venus' for civics elective..
while he claims that he was just joining amos and benny chia.. his real motives are unclear... why join something that he has 'no' interest in since dont know when? or those chees really wishes to find out more about the opposite gender? and learn more about bgrs? last i heard, chees really enjoyed the first civics lesson.... hmmmmm

2) secretly reading a bootleg copy of the rgs yearbook..
hmmm.. since when did chees show an interest in girls?? maybe he is trying to look out for some possible target(s)(???) how many is he interested in?? we can only wait to find out...

3) buying a new computer
while we all thought that his computer was still working.. he claims that it is spoiled.. and now he has just purchased his new much better computer.. isit for the purposes of chatting with girls online??

hmmm... cheesos is so sneaky... haiz.. we must all keep track of sneaky cheesowozo okie? =D

lunch

ehhh i cannot lah fridays jian and i have phy tutorial from 12-whatever time my tutor wants which could be 3 or even 330. sadness. why not wednesday instead cos everyone ends early?

hahahaha carom on friday was so funny berge had this impossible looking shot to win the game and jian betted that berge couldnt make it but he did anyway so jian had to go up and say hi to wilfred. so sweet :)

and errrr i dunno what else to blog about. hope everyone is fine which i presume is true cos i see everyone still alive in sch everyday :) can we take part in some soccer comp or sth someday so that the team x jersey wont rot?

Eh guys eat together on friday at 12 okay? Me and benny ate at ET coffeeshop last friday it was so nostalgic. I realised i have been neglecting dear old watanabe and his gang, not to mention the lovely wanton mee auntie who used to remember that i'll order 3 dollar wanton mee with no veggie. She forgot already on friday =(.

School is so tiring nowadays. Promos are coming so soon, one year is going to pass just like that. So incredibly fast huh. Anyway heard people like taoni got AAAB for commontest which is reallyquite sick but well done nini! The rest of us lets all work hard for promos and not get retained!

I got caprieora (sp?) for my pe elective. argh.. my only consolation is that berge and jia reng are in it too. What did you guys get?

Anyway spotted cheese doing something scandalous. He was hiding at the staircase landing near the vball courts totally engrossed in an evidently bootleg copy of the rgs yearbook. HMM

Essien to MANUTD!!! (?) =D

When you are hailed with as most wanted soccer star in Europe, a trip on board Roman Abramovich's luxury yacht generally precedes a life changing transfer to Chelsea.

Yet when you listen to the words of Lyon midfield maestro Michael Essien, it quickly becomes clear that his long-standing dream does not involve a switch to Stamford Bridge. Indeed, when you hear him speak with such passion about playing for Manchester United, it is clear where his heart lies.
Having apparently failed to land Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, the Premiership champions have turned their attentions to Essien, with a bid of around £17m having already been rejected by the French champions.
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas continues to insist his prized asset will stay, but when the richest club in the world come calling, they are tough to turn down and while Essien may well prefer a switch to Old Trafford, he may have to settle for second best.
'When I was 17, I went to Manchester United for a trial and it was a fantastic experience,' begins 22-year-old Essien. 'It was unbelievable to come into contact with all those star players at Old Trafford. I was in awe of them all. I was like a child looking up at them. I remember getting David Beckham's autograph. It was a special moment and I treasure it to this day.
'But above all, in my eyes, Manchester United meant Eric Cantona. He was my favourite player and I had posters of him all over my bedroom back home. I just loved everything about him; his charisma, the way he turned the collar of his shirt up, his aggression.
'He didn't fear anyone or anything. That left an impression on me. When I was in Manchester, I spent all my money on buying pictures and videos of Cantona from the superstore.
'From that moment, it was my dream to play for United, but unfortunately, a transfer was not possible at that time. I played for their youth team against Coventry, but I couldn't get a work permit and had to go back to Ghana.'
They are not the words of a man who has woken up at night in an excited sweat as he ponders forming a powerful midfield partnership with Chelsea's Frank Lampard.
Still, as Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger constantly suggests, Chelsea don't care if they sign players who lack passion for the club. Their aim is to buy proven performers at any price and try to convert them to the Stamford Bridge project.
The shock appointment of Gerard Houllier as the new Lyon coach sent waves through French soccer and led many to believe Essien would look to jump ship, but vibes from those around the man at the centre of the storm suggest his departure is not inevitable.
A confident character, the heated race to land his signature does not seem to have affected Essien's laid back approach to life in a summer when his thoughts have been dominated by his ambitions to lead Ghana into next summer's World Cup finals.

'My best asset is my ability to win the ball,' he believes. 'I can play in central midfield, on the right flank or in central defence, but it's fair to say I'm happier being in the thick of the action in midfield. I'm someone who needs to go to his physical limits and when I play at the back, I don't feel particularly extended.

'I was rightly criticised in the past for committing too many fouls and receiving too many yellow cards, but that is no longer a problem. My old coach at Lyon Paul Le Guen helped me a lot. He has encouraged me to think a lot more on the pitch, to be less impulsive and calmer on the pitch.
'At Lyon I've become much better on the ball and don't give it away as nearly as much as I once did. My passing is more accurate these days, especially over long distances. I like to see myself as a team player. As a defensive midfielder my role models are Patrick Vieira and Claude Makelele. I hope to achieve as much in football as them.'
With his 23rd birthday still some five months away, Michael Essien has the sporting world at his feet. The only question is what colour shirt he will be wearing as he reaches the peak of his powers.
